“FAKE MARS” mission begins in Israeli desert

Six astronauts began a three-week mission in Israel’s Negev Desert on Monday to simulate conditions on Mars and test out suits, drones, rovers - and human interaction in confined spaces.

Five male and one female members will only have contact with the Austrian Space Forum, which will act as Mission Control, until 31 October.

They will only be allowed to leave the mock space-station base in the Ramon Crater wearing full suits or in a rover.
